FFPRHC Guidance (April 2006) Emergency contraception

Abstract

This Guidance updates and replaces the previous Faculty recommendations on emergency contraception and is applicable to all professionals providing contraceptive services in primary and secondary care in the UK. A key to the grades of recommendations, based on levels of evidence, is given at the end of this document. Details of the methods used by the Clinical Effectiveness Unit in developing this Guidance and evidence tables summarising the research basis of the recommendations are available on the Faculty website (www.ffprhc.org.uk). Abbreviations (in alphabetical order) used include: EC, emergency contraception; IUD, copper-bearing intrauterine device; IUS, levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system; LH, luteinising hormone; LNG, levonorgestrel; PGD, patient group direction; SPC, Summary of Product Characteristics; STIs, sexually transmitted infections; UPSI, unprotected sexual intercourse.
