Men’s behaviours can positively and negatively impact on women’s abortion trajectories
Men’s involvement in abortion decisions and abortion care is understudied but may play a significant role in determining access to abortion care. This scoping review examined 37 studies in low- and middle-income settings, the majority of which were qualitative and conducted in sub-Saharan Africa. Men were found across contexts to be influential on abortion access and method type, through financial and emotional support (or lack thereof). This review highlights the importance of future research into the involvement of men in the abortion-seeking process and interventions that may better empower the person seeking abortion.
