Patients’ experience and satisfaction with self-administered subcutaneous DMPA use during the first year of COVID-19

Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is a progestogen injectable contraceptive method. The subcutaneous (SC) formulation offers the potential for self-administration, thereby providing increased autonomy and contraceptive access. This study comprised interviews with 22 patients who had been using intramuscular, clinician-administered DMPA prior to the start of the pandemic and who received a SC prescription in the first months of the pandemic for self-administration. The respondents felt empowered at having this option. However, they also felt that this option had been forced onto them if they wanted to continue using DMPA. The respondents also discussed logistical issues in accessing DMPA-SC. Being both an acceptable and convenient contractive option, this method should be included in the information provided by those offering contraceptive counselling, and local infrastructure should be adapted in order to be able to support its use.
