Types of female genital mutilation (FGM)

Types of FGMDescription
Type 1: ClitoridectomyPartial or total removal of the clitoris and, in rare cases, only the prepuce
Type 2: ExcisionPartial or total removal of the clitoris and labia minora, with or without removal of the labia majora
Type 3: InfibulationCutting and appositioning of the labia to create a covering seal allowing only a narrow vaginal orifice, with or without clitoridectomy
Type 4: OtherAll other harmful procedures to the genitals for non-medical reasons (e.g. pricking, stretching, tattooing, piercing, scraping, incising, and cauterising)
